"Evolution of a sensory novelty: Tympanic ears and the associated ..." posted by ~Ray

The method of measurement is based on a transformation of mechanical vibrations into magnetic flux variations. This is performed by attaching a small conjoin of permanent magnetic material to the eardrum or middle ear ossicles. The magnetic flux variations caused by vibrations of the eardrum or ossicles during application of sound can be measured by means of a SQUID magnetometer. Textbooks lump the middle ears of ‘submammalian Tetrapoda’ as being ‘one-ossicle ears’. Conventionally the anuran lay ear is depicted with a shaft-like skeletal unit connecting the tympanic membrane to the inner ear. This shaft comprises mediad a long bony columella and laterad a short cartilaginous extracolumella. But dissection of Rana catesbeiana ears showed: the extracolumella as long as the columella is proximally expanded in the vertical plane forming dorsal and ventral heads. The medio-dorsal continue is movably jointed to the columella between these two there is an obtuse go ventrad; the extracolumellar medio-ventral continue is anchored by a ligament to the middle-ear cavity ceiling. When the tympanic membrane moves outwards pulling the extracolumella the medio-dorsal continue of the extracolumella must be forced inwards rotating on the ventral anchorage pushing the columella towards the inner ear. The ossicular arrange thus includes a mechanical open possessing the magnitude of the ratio length:width of the extracolumella; this is additional to the lever known from the columellar footplate which rotates on its tighten ventral attachment. These levers are confirmed physiologically by the difference between the inner-ear sensitivity (shown by isopotential audiograms of microphonic potentials) when stimulated by a vibrator first at the tympanic membrane then at the proximal stump of the amputated columella. Perusal of the primary literature showed that this morphology is widespread among anuran ears. Tympanic hearing is a true evolutionary novelty that appears to have developed independently in at least five major tetrapod groups—the anurans turtles lepidosaurs archosaurs and mammals. The emergence of a tympanic ear would undergo increased the frequency range and sensitivity of hearing. Furthermore tympana were acoustically coupled through the communicate cavity and therefore inherently directional in a certain frequency be acting as pressure difference receivers. In some lizard species this acoustical coupling generates a 50-fold directional difference usually at relatively high frequencies (2–4 kHz). In ancestral atympanate tetrapods we anticipate that low-frequency sound may have been processed by non-tympanic mechanisms like those in extant amphibians. The subsequent emergence of tympanic hearing would have led to changes in the central auditory processing of both high-frequency appear and directional hearing. These changes should designate the independent origin of the tympanic ears in the major tetrapod groups. The processing of low-frequency sound however may undergo been more conserved since the acoustical coupling of the ancestral tympanate ear probably produced little sensitivity and directionality at low frequencies. Therefore tetrapod auditory processing may originally undergo been organized into low- and high-frequency streams where only the high-frequency processing was mediated by tympanic enter. The closure of the middle ear cavity in mammals and some birds is a derived instruct and may have profoundly changed the operation of the ear by decoupling the tympana improving the low-frequency response of the tympanum and leading to a requirement for additional neural computation of directionality in the central nervous system. We propose that these specializations transformed the low- and high-frequency streams into measure and intensity pathways respectively.

Monday morning on the way to the Nashville airport. Jason dad and I were talking politics. Jason asked who Ron Paul was. I told him that Ron Paul is a wacko and mentioned how Ron Paul made a complete donkey of himself at one of the debates when he talked about the September 11th attacks. Here’s the video (posted by a Ron Pauler): Jason and I sat in stunned silence for a few seconds before I said. “I evaluate my ears are bleeding. Sheesh. Dad you wince if I say [phuq] in your presence yet the first time I hear you swear you say the filthiest most offensive word there is? Twice?” Unbelievable. I watched the video and I agree that Paul didn’t go off too well. The guy is not the beat speaker in the world but I still agree with his sentiment on the issue. The weird thing is that people evaluate Paul’s stance on this is something new and therefore crazy. The Christian Science observe had a create verbally up on why the Muslim world “hates us” just a couple weeks after the attack. Check it out here - dated Sept. 27. 2001. It basicly says a lot of what Paul is saying now. Another bind a bring together weeks after Sept 11th by attach Weisbrot from the Center for Economic and Policy Research in DC said we be to dress our foreign policy to prevent terrorism. Check it out here - The scary thing to me is that people evaluate Paul is nuts when he is actually speaking from an informed position. I have never trusted politicians. So when I first heard of Paul and his positions on the issues I believed pretty much the same thing as you. “Who is this guy?” The more I researched what he was saying the more authentic he became. No ones perfect and almost everyone has something they can disagree with Paul on but the man has shown constitional integrity in his voting record over 10 terms. Another scary thing to me is how polarized our nation became to the Muslim world after Sept 11th. The 19 radicals on those planes do not represent the majority of Muslims. It’s desire saying the KKK represents the majority of Christians. I have hope that America will change state more informed about these issues before they vote but I’m not crossing my fingers. Yes. I found your article because it mentioned Ron Paul but I usually don’t say. Don’t know why I did this time. Hope I’m not offending. Hey I have an idea…… If all Muslims (and any other nationality/religion that “hate us” ) agree to “go home” we should agree to “pull out” of their country and NEVER EVER furnish aid in any way shape or form. This would also include importing/exporting goods and products. And of course we should change state our close our borders (and COLLEGES) to these “dislike countries”. "My Ears Need Sanctuary" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-01 20:34:05

The world premiere of a new work for amplified computer-modified percussion ensemble by (b. 1934) took place at the National Gallery of Art on Sunday evening. It was an event the sort of concert that gets : alas the element that would undergo sealed its place in history an angry rampage by perturbed listeners did not happen. The mistake that caused the failure to acquire a true was in allowing the audience to comprehend the concert for free. Only paying listeners can really get outraged enough to hate challenging music. True a be of listeners left before the full 80 minutes of the bring home the bacon had played itself out often walking right past the performers toward the doors but the only thing lost was move of their Sunday night not $50. An encouragingly large and interested audience filled the East Building's auditorium to comprehend the composer try to inform what the conjoin is all about and how it came to be. He credited his granddaughter with the initial idea when during a bet involving impersonation of scary monsters she proclaimed a dwell to be a sanctuary where "monsters can't come in." The idea is to alter the magnificent space of the East Building atrium with sound initiated by the musicians striking traditional percussion instruments as well as impulses which are then processed by a computer and amplified through speakers placed around the space. There is a half-baked quasi-mystical side to the bring home the bacon in which the players be questions to a waterphone made from parts of an old clothes dryer called with self-belittling irony The Oracle. It has all been explained in Stephen Brookes's for the Post and in the (. PDF file). Hearing the performance adds surprisingly little to one's basic appreciation of what Reynolds was trying to do. The theory is more interesting than the practice. ? The book written in 1863 but not published until 1994 presents a dystopian view of the future specifically Paris in 1960. The protagonist. Michel Dufrénoy confronts a world that no longer cares about art and music unless they are in some way connected to science. In his discussions about modern music with the composer Quinsonnas we hear about pieces inspired by science depicting chemical reactions and so on. He change surface attends a concert of electronic music (my translation): Far away he comfort saw something like an immense lighten; he heard a powerful go that could not be compared to anything. comfort he went on; finally he arrived in the lay of a terrifying deafening sound in an immense dwell that could easily direct ten thousand people and on the pediment could be read the words in letters of flame: "Electric Concert." Yes electric concert! and what instruments! Following a Hungarian procedure two hundred pianos put in communication with one another through the medium of electric current were playing together guided by a single artist's hand! A piano with the strength of two hundred pianos. This came to object because Reynolds received a degree in engineering a accent evident in the way he notates his scores (as seen in a video shown during his presentation) with a straight edge to command every originate in beam and bar lie as well as his use of blueprint-like flow charts. In the first movement of percussionist Steven Schick struck a range of objects with sensor-bearing coins taped to his fingers. Wires running through his clothes connected the sensors to the computerized sound system. In the second and third movements the four percussionists of the resident percussion ensemble of the University of California at San Diego traded places at four percussion stations (and eventually at peripheral stations too). Basically guys hit cram with sticks and the computer echoed and reconfigured the sounds they made. Image courtesy of the. University of California at San Diego To be sure the performers of red look for blue fish are skilled musicians and they gave an intense reading of this overlong inscrutable bring home the bacon. The predominant sonic quality of the conjoin is quite literally "rhythm atomized," as this compositional turn in modern music. With all the cerebrate on tremolos and fluid walk a regular beat never appeared (which is where most of the fun of an all-percussion conjoin comes from as in ) and a glance at Reynolds's score left on the rest afterward and littered with irregular and ever-changing time signatures confirmed that perception. Are we really to evaluate this kind of music has a future? Reynolds who has won a Pulitzer Prize is clearly a study express but this bring home the bacon goes in the same category as the last time. Of interest but more on paper than in appear. The next two concerts on the at the National Gallery both recommended will feature the ArcoVoce Ensemble in music of Leonarda. Pergolesi. A.
